Pompallier Mission
Things to do
Situated in a beautiful waterfront setting in the Bay of Islands, this printery and tannery, built by Catholic missionaries in a French style rammed-earth construction, combines momentous Maori and European history, glorious gardens and hands-on fun.
Visit the last remaining building of the 1840s Catholic Mission Headquarters to Western Oceania. The French used rammed earth to build this unique factory. Enjoy the garden that was created in 1879-80 from the crowded Mission compound. The Mission's original printing press, restored to working order, provides an opportunity to experience hands-on the curious printer and tannery equipment of this frontier Mission tannery and book-making works.
During summer a seasonal Coffee, Croissant and Culture Tour combines the fully guided, hands-on tour with an opportunity to relax with coffee and croissants on the veranda overlooking the gardens and harbour.
