Hihiaua Cultural Centre

Things to do

Step off the Hatea Loop and take time to experience the Hihiaua Cultural Centre. View the magnificent carved waka, meet creatives at work, experience the unique and local artworks in Te Wairua Toi gallery, and shop for special gifts.

The Hihiaua Cultural Centre is the manifestation of the wish of local elders and leaders to reclaim, restore and renew Māori arts and culture. Out of this vision has risen what is now an award-winning architectural icon, standing between two rivers, housing a whakairo workshop, creative spaces, meeting places, gallery and a new waka shelter with its own launching gantry. What was once an industrial boat building facility has been transformed into a versatile and creative space, filled with an eclectic exhibition of authentic Māori art and unique local creations from nationally renowned artists.
