Five Top Places to Eat and Drink Along the Twin Coast Cycle Trail

The Pou Herenga Tai – Twin Coast Cycle Trail is an epic journey through some of Taitokerau Northland’s most stunning landscapes, but it’s not just scenic viewpoints and historical landmarks that you’ll pass along the way. Riding from coast to coast, you’ll have the chance to savour some of Northland’s fresh and local flavours at quaint cafes and hidden-gem eateries. Here’s our guide to five must-visit spots to refuel and relax along the trail:

Te Patiki Café, Māngungu Mission (Western Terminus)

Māngungu Mission is a Tohu Whenua property and site of the largest signing of Te Tiriti (the Treaty of Waitangi) in 1840. It also marks the western terminus of the cycle trail. Earlier this year, Te Patiki cafe opened up on site, making this a perfect place to enjoy a well-deserved coffee after completing the scenic ride down from Ōkaihau. The cafe also offers cabinet treats and hot meals, along with beautiful views out over the Hokianga Harbour.

Sapphire Café, Ōkaihau

Known for its delicious homemade pies - both sweet and savoury - Sapphire Café is a favourite among locals and riders alike. Kelly’s creations are perfect for a hearty snack before or after tackling the trail’s rolling hills. You’ll find the cafe along the main street in Ōkaihau - it’s impossible to miss with a stunning mural on the exterior!

Pioneer Village Café, Kaikohe

Located in the heart of the trail, this café sits beside the cycle hub in a picturesque garden setting. With a museum next door, it’s a great place to take a break, enjoy a meal, and soak in Kaikohe’s heritage. Top tip: Kaikohe is an excellent place to base yourself for the trail – from here, the trail heads downhill in both directions!

Kawakawa Rail Station Café

Whether it’s breakfast, lunch, or a late afternoon bite, this café delivers superb meals all day. This is also the departure point for the Bay of Islands Vintage Railway, which connects the cycle trail between Taumarere Station and Whangae. Either board here and enjoy the novelty of riding a train down the middle of State Highway 1 or ride on to board at Taumarere.

Opua General Store

At the eastern terminus, grab a great coffee and a tasty selection of sandwiches, sweets, and savouries at the Opua General Store. The store actually sits out over the water on piles, and there are plenty of scenic spots to sit around the wharf and marina and enjoy the view. An idyllic end to your Twin Coast adventure.
