Five reasons why the Northland Journey The Welcoming Coast is perfect for foodies

The Welcoming Coast is a journey famous for spectacular coastal views, wide open beaches, stunning sunrises and friendly locals, but what you’ll be surprised by is the intriguing flavours and hidden gem eateries which lure you in. Here’s five (of many more) reasons why foodies must journey The Welcoming Coast:

Eutopia Café.

This incredibly unique cafe & art space in Kaiwaka was handcrafted by its owners Marijke & Robert along with their sons and some helpful volunteers. You’ll feel like you’re in a dream as you enjoy delicious food and drinks made with locally grown produce, inside this spectacularly sculptured building. It took 5 years to complete, and it’s easy to see why with the detail and craftmanship that has gone into creating this magical space.

Bennetts of Mangawhai.

Calling all choco-holics! This is one stop on the Welcoming Coast Journey that you won’t want to miss. Started by trained chocolatiers Clayton and Mary Bennett in 1998, Bennetts use high-quality local ingredients to create their award-winning handcrafted chocolate. Their melt-in -your-mouth French-inspired style chocolate comes in a range of classic and uniquely Northland flavours. Next to the chocolate factory shop, you will find the Bennetts café. The seasonal menu showcases local produce and will leave any brunch afficionado satisfied. As you enjoy your ‘Eggs Bennetts’ their version of kiwi fave eggs bene, you’ll feel like you’re in the South of France sitting beneath the hanging vines in the Mediterranean-style courtyard. If you don’t have time to sit down for a meal, grab a takeaway coffee and one of their scrumptious freshly made pastries and enjoy on the move.

Mangawhai Market.

Wander through this delightful outdoor/indoor market and sample incredible local products and produce. You will find crafts, clothing and homewares on offer and after you’re done looking around grab a pint and enjoy some live entertainment at the infamous summer live gig venue Mangawhai Tavern. If you’ve got a beach day planned, Mangawhai market is the perfect place to pick up supplies to create your own anti-pasto picnic platter.

The Cove Café.

Located opposite one of Northlands most iconic beaches with beautiful views across to Whangarei Heads and the Hen and Chicken Islands it is the perfect place to sit with friends to enjoy spectacular food and a refreshing local beer or wine. With a great mix of both indoor and outdoor dining, it’s a popular spot year round.

McLeod’s Pizza Barn.

Multi-award-winning beer on tap and simple but tasty food is what this well-known Scottish-themed  roadside hotspot is all about. Brothers Geoff and Clayton Gwynne have owned Waipu’s iconic Pizza Barn since 2003 and turned it into a household name when they launched McLeod's Brewery in 2014. Serving up hand-rolled pizza bases, house-smoked wings and ribs, classic kiwi-faves like burgers and fish n chips and fresh salads, their food it designed to “make you feel right at home”. If you’ve never tried their much-loved brews before you can purchase a tasting paddle and try them all!
