The Far North is a paradise of scenic landscapes, captivating culture, and exhilarating adventure waiting to be explored. With the reopening of State Highway 1 through the Mangamuka Gorge, the journey is as scenic as the destination. Starting from Auckland, this three-day itinerary is perfect for those who want to experience the magic of Northland over a long weekend. 

Friday: The Journey North

Morning
Auckland to Kawakawa

Kick off your adventure with a pitstop in Whangārei for a well-deserved morning coffee. The Town Basin is known for its waterfront charm, the iconic Hundertwasser Art Centre with Wairau Māori Art Gallery and bustling cafes where you can enjoy a freshly brewed flat white paired with a sweet treat to fuel your day. If time permits, take a quick stroll along the waterfront and part of the Hātea Loop to admire the art, sculptures and boutique stores that dot the area. 

As you continue on the road north, a brief break in Kawakawa is a must to visit the famous Hundertwasser Toilets. This whimsical masterpiece, also designed by Austrian artist Friedensreich Hundertwasser, is a unique blend of art, functionality, and environmental design.

Afternoon 
Exploring Doubtless Bay 

By lunchtime, you’ll reach the historic fishing village of Mangonui, home to the iconic Mangonui Fish Shop. Perched over the water, this world-famous spot serves some of the freshest fish and chips in New Zealand. As you enjoy your meal, keep an eye out for the fishing vessels unloading their catch at the end of the wharf. 

After lunch, immerse yourself in the beauty of Doubtless Bay. Stroll along the golden sands of Coopers Beach, a perfect spot for paddling in the shallows or simply soaking in the serenity. Nearby Cable Bay offers a similar appeal, with sparkling waters and soft sands that glow in the sunlight. History buffs will enjoy a visit to the Butler Point Whaling Museum, where you can learn about the region’s fascinating whaling past and explore a beautiful historic homestead surrounded by gardens. For breathtaking views, take a short hike up to the top of Rangikapiti Pā, where you’ll find remnants of a historic Māori pā site and a vantage point overlooking the surrounding coastline.

Evening 
Dinner and relaxation 

Doubtless Bay’s culinary scene doesn’t disappoint. Dine at Remarkable Cafe and Restaurant, a local favorite known for its exceptional seafood and picturesque waterfront location. End the evening with a leisurely stroll along the boardwalk, the perfect way to unwind after a day of travel and discovery. 

Saturday: Adventure and Discovery

Te Hiku o te Ika-a-Māui 

Rise early for the drive to Te Rerenga Wairua Cape Reinga, where the Tasman Sea meets the Pacific Ocean in a striking clashing of currents. This sacred spot is deeply significant in Māori culture, believed to be the departure point for spirits journeying back to Hawaiki, their ancestral homeland. Take a moment to reflect at the lone pohutukawa tree, thought to be over 800 years old, and soak in the dramatic vistas. 

On your way back south, stop at the Te Paki Sand Dunes for an exciting adventure. These towering dunes are an iconic playground offering an adrenaline-pumping experience as you slide down the golden slopes. For those who prefer a slower pace, the dunes are equally stunning to explore on foot. Top tip: wear socks in the summer months to protect your feet against the hot sand.

Afternoon 
Stepping back in time 

Next, head to Ka-Uri, where you’ll discover awe-inspiring creations made of ancient kauri trees preserved for tens of thousands of years. Wander through the displays, marvel at the kauri staircase carved from one enormous stump, and learn about the connection of people and place. Nearby, the Gumdiggers Park offers a step back in time to the 19th-century gum-digging era, with walking trails through archaeological sites and displays that bring this unique industry to back to life.

Ahipara Horse Treks

Evening 
Sunset sights and fresh flavours 

Wrap up your day with a magical sunset horseback ride along the shores of Ahipara with Ahipara Horse Treks. The tranquility of Ninety Mile Beach, paired with the soft hues of a setting sun, creates an unforgettable experience. Afterward, head into Kaitaia for dinner at Peekaboo, where you’ll find epic flavours and great pizza in an inviting atmosphere.

Morning 
Heading south 

On your journey south, take the scenic drive through the reopened Mangamuka Gorge. Your first stop is Ngawha Springs, a complex of geothermal hot springs known for their therapeutic properties. Soak in the mineral-rich pools, each with its own unique temperature and character, while surrounded by the calming sights and sounds of nature.

Afternoon 
The Hokianga Harbour 

Continue your drive to Rawene, a charming wee harbourside town where you’ll find the delightful Boatshed Cafe. Nestled along the water’s edge, this spot offers a menu brimming with fresh ingredients and local favourites. If time allows, make your way to Manea Footprints of Kupe, an immersive cultural experience that tells the story of Kupe, the legendary Polynesian navigator who first discovered Aotearoa. 

As the weekend draws to a close, make a final stop in Matakohe to visit the Kauri Museum. This award-winning museum is a treasure trove of history, showcasing the significance of the kauri tree in New Zealand’s past. Explore the impressive displays of gum, woodwork, and machinery, and gain a deeper appreciation for the region’s heritage. 

Return to Auckland in the evening, carrying with you memories of a weekend well spent exploring the stunning landscapes, rich culture, and warm hospitality of the Far North.
