This four-night luxury itinerary weaves together the rich cultural heritage and natural beauty of the Bay of Islands with the finest experiences in Aotearoa New Zealand’s north. Staying at The Landing, a coastal retreat steeped in history and framed by rolling vineyards and private beaches, guests will encounter stories of early Māori and European encounters, dine on seasonal cuisine crafted by a private chef, and explore the region’s breathtaking coastlines by boat and air. Thoughtfully curated to showcase both the luxury and authenticity of Taitokerau Northland, this journey celebrates the deep connections between land, culture, and hospitality.
Day 1
Black Robin Tours and Transfers offer both intriguing tours and private transfers making them an excellent option for getting around Northland. Transfer from Auckland or Bay of Islands Airport to Waitangi Treaty Grounds, a place of national significance, where Te Tiriti o Waitangi (the nation’s founding document) was signed in 1840. Admission includes a guided tour of the grounds and a cultural performance in Te Whare Runanga (the carved meeting house) as well as entry to two contemporary museums, access to Ngatokimatawhaorua (the world’s largest ceremonial canoe) and more. A stop at the onsite Whare Waka Cafe for a coffee or snack is a great way to keep the energy levels high, as exploring the full offering of the Waitangi Treaty Grounds takes the best part of a morning, or more!
For lunch, Charlotte’s Kitchen is just a short transfer or a thirty-minute walk along the waterfront from the Waitangi Treaty Grounds, and offers an exciting menu, great drinks, and spectacular views from its over-water location at the end of the Paihia Wharf.
Following lunch, board a heli flight from the Paihia Waterfront with Salt Air, to transfer to The Landing via a scenic route over the Bay of Islands and past the famous ‘Hole in the Rock’, Motukōkako (Piercy Island).
The Landing is a luxury retreat featuring four residences and a vineyard in an historically important site on the edge of the Bay of Islands. After checking in, a Vineyard Tour and Wine Tasting, one of the Touchstone Experiences of The Landing, is an excellent way to sink into the relaxed atmosphere and soak up the coastal views.
Full inclusion rates at The Landing include a private chef, and with a daily menu tailored to tastes, requirements, mood and itinerary, it’s a great way to sample the flavours of Northland, including seasonal ingredients from the property and local area.

Day 2
Along with enjoying the stunning residences and exceptional food, The Landing has plenty to offer in the form of their Touchstone Experiences. Sharing the Purerua Peninsula with Rangihoua Heritage Park, the site of New Zealand’s first township of Māori and European settlers living and trading together, The Landing reveals the rich history of the area through a Heritage Tour, visiting archeological sites of interest around the property while the knowledgeable guide shares stories of explorers, sailors, whalers, chiefs, missionaries, traders, and settlers.
Of course, this beautiful peninsula on the northern side of the Bay of Islands should be explored from the water too, and thanks to Iti Rangi, The Landing's private boat, this is another Touchstone Experience not to be missed. Boarding from the private jetty, the Marine Cruise tours through pristine coves and bays, past volcanic rock formations and alongside sites of historical and geological interest.
Wrapping up the day, the final Touchstone Experience is a Kiwi Night Walk, The iconic kiwi bird lives in abundance in this area and the night walk includes spotting their burrows, listening for their calls, and likely spotting the kiwi by torchlight as they roam the forest in search of food.

Day 3
Although there is plenty enough to see and do around The Landing, the wider Bay of Islands and Northland are calling. Immerse in culture in the Hokianga, easily accessible via road or even helicopter, where the story of the great Polynesian explorer Kupe is brought to life at Manea Footprints of Kupe. This intriguing cultural centre shares not only the journey of Kupe but also the Māori creation story and atua (Māori deities) through a multisensory tour. Just south of the Hokianga Harbour is the Waipoua Forest, home to the world’s largest kauri tree - Tāne Mahuta.
If golf is on the cards, Northland is home to some of Aotearoa New Zealand’s best courses including Kauri Cliffs. Designed by David Harman and located atop stunning cliffs overlooking the Pacific Ocean, this championship course is not just memorable for its luxury facilities but its spectacular views as well.
Finally, Northland’s food and beverage offering is an often overlooked and definitely underrated experience in itself. Two local restaurants have been awarded ‘One Hat” ratings in the Cuisine Good Food Awards – Terra Restaurant in Paihia and Sage Restaurant at Paroa Bay Winery. Additionally, wineries such as Marsden Estate and Omata Estate are great options for perfectly paired lunches, while local favourites such as Māha Restaurant at Wharepuke in Kerikeri and The Duke of Marlborough in Russell are always a great option.

Day 4
A trip to Northland is not complete without a visit to the top of the country and a scenic flight with Salt Air is just the ticket. Transfer via heli to the Bay of Islands Airport in Kerikeri, where a fixed wing aircraft will depart for Te Rerenga Wairua Cape Reinga. Passing by spectacular harbours, cute seaside towns and of course, famous Ninety Mile Beach, the flight lands at an airfield approximately 20km from Cape Reinga. Once on the ground, an airconditioned mini-bus meets the aircraft, embarking on a 2.5hr tour around the very top of the country before returning back to the airfield for the scenic flight back. The half day tour still allows for plenty of time to relax about the residences of The Landing, explore more of Northland or kick back and enjoy another deliciously paired meal before watching the sun set and starry skies appear.
