This three-night itinerary is the golfers’ gateway to Northland, showcasing the full spectrum of golf courses to be found in the region – from world class golf destinations to rural country courses. Along the way, you’ll experience some of the highlights of Northland’s landscapes and scenery, including contrasting coastlines, top-rated walking trails, and awe-inspiring kauri forests.
DAY 1
A full day at Te Arai Links
Just 1 hour and 15 minutes north of Auckland is Te Arai Links, a world-class golfing destination featuring two pure links courses showcasing coastal landscapes alongside a variety of other exciting activities – mountain biking, water sports, tennis, pickleball and more. The golf courses alternate every day, one members’ course and one resort course, so keen golfers who wish to play both should consider booking accommodation and staying the night here.
Enjoy a late breakfast or early lunch at Ric’s Restaurant on site, then warm up at The Playground – the world’s largest putting green, two acres in size and right next to Ric’s Restaurant, before heading off to play 18 holes on either the north or south course.
If you’re on the north course, enjoy a post-round beverage at the North Clubhouse, otherwise consider heading a couple of minutes up the road to Te Arai Point Beach for a dip or sunset beach stroll.
If you’re staying over at Te Arai Links, enjoy a meal at Oceans Restaurant on site. Otherwise, Aotearoa Surf Eco Pods are just 15 minutes up the road, and Mangawhai is just half an hour away, with a range of great bach accommodation available through Bachcare and epic pizza awaiting at Wood St Pizzeria.

DAY 2
Mangawhai Gems
Begin the day with a relaxed breakfast at Bennetts of Mangawhai Café, where fresh pastries, seasonal delights, and their famous hot chocolate set the tone for the day. Be sure to try the irresistible cinnamon brioche, best enjoyed in their Mediterranean-style courtyard. Before you leave, stop by their flagship chocolate store to pick up some handcrafted sweet treats. We think the Mangawhai Sea Salt Chocolate bar is perfect for post-round indulgence.
Next, it’s time to tee off at Mangawhai Golf Club, home to one of New Zealand’s top courses. This sand-based coastal gem remains playable year-round, and the greens run fast and true, making for a premium golfing experience. Set amidst native flora and gentle undulations, the course blends seamlessly into its natural surroundings, providing both a technical test and stunning outlooks.
After your round, settle in at Greenview Café, located within the clubhouse. With sweeping views over the course and beyond, this spot is the perfect place to unwind over a delicious traditional Thai lunch.
If time allows, spend the rest of the afternoon diving into the intriguing history of Mangawhai at the Mangawhai Museum, or stretch your legs along the popular Mangawhai Cliffs Walkway, considered one of the best short walks in the country. Clear days reveal spectacular coastal views as far as the Coromandel Peninsula and Aotea Great Barrier Island.
As the sun sets, treat yourself to bold flavours at Gringas, a vibrant Mexican eatery known for its tasty tacos and impressive tequila selection.
Stay the night in magical Mangawhai, where a range of classic Kiwi baches and boutique accommodations await.

DAY 3
Contrasting coastlines and country courses
Begin the day with a hearty breakfast at Brewed As in Mangawhai, a local favourite known for its great coffee and relaxed atmosphere, before heading west towards the Kauri Coast, where today’s round of golf promises a new challenge.
Nestled near Dargaville, Northern Wairoa Golf Club offers a short but challenging layout, making precision and strategy key. With striped fairways and renowned greens, this course rewards accuracy and skill, providing a memorable game for golfers looking to test their abilities.
After your round, it’s time for a classic Kiwi lunch. Head to Sharkys Takeaways at Baylys Beach for tasty fish and chips, or return to Dargaville for a relaxed café-style meal.
The afternoon is yours to explore the Kauri Coast’s natural wonders. Take a refreshing dip in the crystal-clear waters of Kai Iwi Lakes, or wander along the vast sands of Baylys Beach. For a deeper connection to Taitokerau Northland’s iconic kauri trees, visit The Kauri Museum to learn about the past, present and future of these immense giants, or immerse yourself among them at Trounson Kauri Park, a mainland “island” of kauri thriving with threatened species like the North Island brown kiwi. If time allows, make the journey up to Tāne Mahuta in Waipoua Forest, where you’ll stand in awe of New Zealand’s largest living kauri tree - an experience not to be missed.
As evening approaches, this remote and peaceful coastline offers a chance to slow down and soak in the tranquility. Stock up on supplies in Dargaville and prepare yourself a tasty meal at Wild Forest Estate, or for a touch of luxury, Waipoua Lodge provides a warm welcome with the option to pre-order a four-course dining experience - the perfect way to unwind after a day of golf and adventure.
