In response to the New Zealand Government's City and Regional Deals initiative—aimed at fostering economic growth, enhancing infrastructure, and improving housing supply through partnerships between central and local governments— Northland's four councils, in collaboration with Northland Inc, have developed the Northland Regional Deal proposal. This proposal outlines strategic priorities and projects designed to unlock the region's economic potential and deliver long-term benefits to its communities.

The Northland Regional Deal focuses on four key sectors that will drive Northland’s future prosperity:

  • Future Energy – Positioning Northland as a renewable energy hub and improving energy security.
  • Marine Manufacturing – Expanding Northport, supporting a floating dry dock, and fostering a sustainable inshore fishing fleet.
  • Primary Industries – Strengthening Northland’s food production sector through aquaculture, horticulture, and innovative land use.
  • Visitor Economy – Investing in high-quality visitor accommodation and cultural experiences to grow international tourism.

Backed by strategic infrastructure investments, smarter policies, and co-investment opportunities, this proposal is set to increase Northland’s GDP by $977M, create over 6,000 new jobs, and boost exports by $877M. It’s more than an economic strategy—it’s a commitment to a stronger, more resilient Northland.
