Bring the whole family for a morning of outdoor adventure, discovery, and hands-on conservation at the beautiful Waimahanga Track!

Event Overview:

Join us for two hours of fun and learning, where families can dive into the world of invasive weeds, native plants, and birdlife. With a mix of interactive activities, guided walks, and even a tree-planting session, this event is perfect for nature-loving families eager to make a difference!

Event Schedule:

1. Invasive Weed and Predator Control Education & Hands-On Learning

Location: Under the Puriri Tree

Time: 10:00 am and 11:45 am

Get ready to roll up your sleeves! Learn about the top 6 Northland Nasties—our most troublesome weeds—and discover how to tackle them. Plus, find out how we’re keeping the track predator-free to protect our native birds. Our friendly volunteers will guide you through hands-on demonstrations, showing you how to identify and remove these pesky invaders. You’ll even get to learn how to use the Trap NZ portal to track your trapping efforts at home!

A. Spot the Weed/Native Plant Challenge

Time: 11:00 am

Start Location: Puriri Tree swing, a 7-minute walk from the Waimahanga Track Carpark

Grab a checklist and join our guided walk to spot and identify invasive weeds and native plants. Along the way, you’ll learn about the impact these species have on our ecosystem and how birds play a crucial role in keeping things balanced. And yes, there’s even some tree planting to reinforce what you’ve learned!

B. Tiakina Predator-Free Walk & Bird Spotting

Time: 11:00 am

Start Location: Puriri Tree Swing, a 7-minute walk from the Waimahanga Track Carpark

Join us on a journey to explore our predator control efforts on the track. You’ll visit bait stations, learn about their importance, and get tips on spotting local birds. Plus, if you’re keen, find out how you can help start a new track line as part of our predator control efforts.

3. Takeaway Colouring Competition

Get creative with our native plant and bird-themed colouring sheets! Take them home, colour them in, and send us a photo of your masterpiece to enter the prize draw.

4. Tree Planting

Time: 11:45 am

Location: Puriri Tree Swing, a 7-minute walk from the Waimahanga Track Carpark

Wrap up the day by planting a tree and leaving a lasting impact on the Waimahanga Track. This collective effort helps restore our local ecosystem and ensures the track remains a thriving haven for native species.
