Interconnectedness: Patterns and Diversity

Symposium dates Friday 30th August - Sunday 1st September 2024

Venue; Forum North, Whangārei

Social Fabric, Interconnectedness: Patterns and Diversity is the annual symposium for the Costume and Textile Association of New Zealand (CTANZ). This is the first time it will be hosted in Northland, the program shares the latest research and discoveries in the realm of dress, textiles and contemporary art. We have a wonderful selection of presenters sharing in response to our theme, and we can announce our three Keynote speakers; the fabulous fabric artist, educator, and storyteller Ron Te Kawa, Rowan Panther, the lace textile artist whose immaculate work occupies the space between art and artefact and Ruth Port from the weaving group Te Rā Ringa Raupā, who are contributing to research on the incredible Te Rā through their work to replicate it. We’ll bring you more on their work and other papers you can look forward to in future newsletters. It's a dynamic meeting of minds, where we present a rich tapestry of papers, panels and events that reflect our diverse interests and expertise. Bringing together Aotearoa’s leading curators, historians, academics and artists working in this field this is a weekend you will remember.

Program announcement to come!

About The Costume and Textile Association of New Zealand

Emerging from the creative heart of the Auckland Museum Institute in 2002, the Costume and Textile Association of New Zealand (CTANZ) fills a vital gap in the fabric of New Zealand's cultural landscape – a dedicated hub for the exploration, appreciation, and preservation of dress, textiles and art.

At CTANZ, we're not just about clothes and fabrics; we're about igniting passion and curiosity. Our mission is to spark intrigue in the diverse tapestry of historical and contemporary dress and textiles. We're here to celebrate the artistry, innovation, and the stories they carry via our journal, Context, annual symposiums and exhibitions.

We exist to explore both New Zealand's unique textile heritage and the global interweaving of fashion and culture. We're passionate about delving into the narratives that clothing and textiles hold, uncovering the connections between past and present, and how they shape our future. We understand that every piece of clothing, every textile, holds a piece of history.

Our members are the colourful threads that make up our vibrant community. We're more than museum curators and fashion designers (although they're here too!). We're historians, writers, artists and craft practitioners, and anyone with an insatiable curiosity for the world of dress and textiles.
