Andrew Joyce - cello and Juan Liu - piano have crafted a programme with two cornerstone works of the cello and piano repertoire. They infuse the eclectic programme with grace and whimsy weaving their instruments' voices together with exquisite artistry. Studies of English Folk songs; also work by Paul Hindemith and contemporary composers: Fang Dongqing (Chinese) and Dorothy Buchanan (New Zealand).
For the pair’s first collaboration as a duo, Joyce & Liu have carefully crafted a programme that is framed by two cornerstone works of the cello and piano chamber repertoire, opening with the intricate melodies and harmonies of Bach’s Sonata in G minor, and ultimately celebrating the rich language and texture of Brahms Sonata No. 2 F Major Op. 99
Before joining the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra as Principal Cellist in 2010, UK-born Andrew Joyce played regularly with the London Symphony and London Philharmonic Orchestras, and toured the world’s great concert halls as Guest Principal. Internationally-acclaimed concert pianist Dr Jian Liu is currently the Programme Director of Classical Performance and Head of Piano Studies at the New Zealand School of Music—Te Kōkī.
