How long does it take to drive around Northland?

The Twin Coast Discovery Highway is an 800km circular touring route which starts and finishes in Auckland. It could take you about 14 hours to drive the loop non-stop....but that'd be crazy! Take time...stay a while. Here's a suggested itinerary for 5-7 days in Northland.

When is the best time to visit Northland?

There are plenty of things to do all year round. Summer (Dec, Jan and Feb is our busier summer period). You can see from our Annual Events that we have stuff going on pretty much all year round.

What's the climate like?

New Zealand’s warmest & only subtropical region.2000 sunshine hours on average (each year). Hottest months: January & February. Winters are mild. Daylight saving in effect September to April. Look at our Northland weather cams.

What clothes should I take?

As Northland doesn't do extreme hot or cold, you won't need snow jackets, but pack layers of clothing as temperature can vary considerably between day and night.

Are there any poisonous animals in Northland?

Northland, (and all of New Zealand) has no harmful animals like poisonous snakes or venomous insects, so its sole poisonous native spider – the rare katipō – is extremely rare!

Is it safe to drink the water in New Zealand?

New Zealand cities and towns have excellent water supplies and in all cases tap water is fresh and safe to drink. Giardia is a water-borne parasite that causes diarrhoea. To avoid contracting it, it is best not to drink water from lakes, ponds or rivers without first boiling, chemically treating or filtering it

What is the voltage of electricity supply in NZ? Do I need a converter?

Electricity is supplied throughout New Zealand at 230/240 volts, 50 hertz. Power outlets only accept angled two or three pin Type I plugs (as also used in Australia) depending on whether an earth connection is fitted.

When is the best time to go trekking/hiking in Northland?

There are plenty of walks to suit all ages and fitness levels throughout Northland. Most walks are freedom walks which due to the region’s temperate climate can be walked all year round, although checking conditions with the locals is advisable.
