Top young equestrians from around New Zealand will converge on Whangarei’s picturesque Barge Show Grounds for the national pony club event championships in April 2017.
Each pony club area in New Zealand will select six riders to make up their team in the New Zealand Pony Club Association 2017.
The Northland Area Pony Club is hosting the event.
Riders and their mounts will all compete in the disciplines of dressage, cross-country and show jumping over the three-day event. And the public is invited to come and watch this contest of equestrian excellence.
Friday: Dressage routines will be performed on the first day of the event; horse and rider polished and beautiful as they execute paces and manoeuvres within an arena. Judges will be looking for obedience, flexibility and balance in this equestrian art form.
Saturday: The thrilling spectacle of horses charging over a cross-country course can be experienced on day two. The same horses that exhibited the fine points of dressage the day before must now show endurance and courage. Navigating hill and flat, forest, open country and water, horse and rider cover a course of two to three kilometres with up to 30 jumps. The cross country course is being designed by Northland equestrians Megan Finlayson and Kate Wood.
Sunday: The same combinations of horse and rider will be asked to show athleticism and agility as they compete in the show jumping arena. Riders aim to jump a complex course of colourful jumps without knocking a rail within an optimum time. Horses need to be able to jump, turn sharply and take jumps at an angle in order to gain a clear round in the best time.
There are three classes in the event. The MT class is for riders aged 14 and under, with jumps at a maximum height of 95cm. The DC class is for riders 16 and under with jumps up to 1.05 metres. And the A1 class allows competitors aged between 17 and 21 with jumps up to 1.10 metres on the cross country course, and up to 1.15 metres on the show jumping course.
Individual riders are invited to compete in an all-comers horse trial over the Friday and Saturday, with classes for 1.05 metres, 95cm and 80cm jump heights.
